Hermit Crab Diet Guide ๐ฆ (The Truth!)
What is a Hermit Crab?
A hermit crab is a popular pet. It is not a "true" crab. It is an "anomuran." It has a soft, vulnerable abdomen. It must wear a shell. This shell is its "mobile home." ๐ It is a land animal (mostly). It breathes with "modified gills." It needs high humidity to breathe. It will "drown" in water. It is NOT an "easy" or "throwaway" pet. It is a complex, exotic animal. Its needs are very specific. And 99% of "pet store" advice... ...is WRONG. And dangerous. ๐ซ This is especially true for its diet. This guide will show you the truth.
The #1 Myth: The "Pellet" Trap ๐ซ
This is the most important part. This is the "hidden danger." You bought your crab at a beach shop. Or a pet store. What did they sell you? A "kit." A small, plastic "critter keeper." And a box of "Hermit Crab Pellets." You were told: "Just feed it these." "This is all they need." This is a 100% LIE. It is a fatal lie. Those pellets are POISON. โ ๏ธ They are "slow-acting" poison. They will not kill your crab today. They will kill your crab in 6 months. A "healthy" hermit crab can live... ...for 10 to 30 YEARS. (This is not a joke). ( A "pellet-fed" crab (in a plastic cage)... ...will live for 6 to 12 months. (This is a tragedy). ( This is a "failure to thrive." The pellets are the #1 cause.
Why are Pellets Poison? (The "Ingredients")
You must become a "label detective." ๐ต๏ธ Go get your pellet box. Read the "ingredients." You will be horrified. Trap 1: The Preservatives (The #1 Killer) To make a "shelf-stable" (dry) pellet... ...companies must use preservatives. The two worst ones are: 1. Ethoxyquin. 2. Copper Sulfate. Ethoxyquin: This is a 10/10 poison. It is a "pesticide" (a bug-killer). It is banned in human food. It is toxic. Copper Sulfate: This is a fungicide. (It kills mold). (It is also a "molluscicide." (A "snail-killer" and "crab-killer"). ( Yes, they put "crab-killer"... ...in "crab-food." This is insane. But it is true. These "toxins" build up in the crab. They damage their gills. They interfere with "molting." They will kill your crab. Trap 2: The "Fillers" (The "Junk") The rest of the pellet is "junk." It is "fish meal" (mystery fish). It is "corn meal" (a cheap filler). It has artificial "red dye 40." This is not "food." It is "junk." It is "fast food" poison. The Rule: Throw your pellets in the trash. NOW. They are garbage.
The Real Hermit Crab Diet (The "Why")
So, what do they really eat? The answer is: Everything. They are OMNIVORE SCAVENGERS. (This is the key). ( In the wild (on the beach)... ...they are the "cleanup crew." ๐๏ธ They walk for miles every night. They are "foraging." They are "hunting." They eat:
- Dead fish (protein) ๐
- Dead insects (protein)
- Rotten wood (cellulose)
- Fallen coconuts (fat) ๐ฅฅ
- Fallen fruit (sugar/carbs) ๐
- Seaweed (minerals)
- Other crabs' poop! (Microbes/minerals)
The "YES" List (The 100% Safe Foods) โ
This is your new "shopping list." It is easy. Your crab just eats your (healthy) food! The Golden Rules: 1. Food must be 100% organic (if possible). (Pesticides will kill them). ( 2. Food must be 100% un-salted. (Salt/spices are bad). ( 3. Food must be 100% un-seasoned. (No "garlic powder," etc.). (
1. Proteins (The "Meat" - 50% of diet)
This is essential. (Especially for "molting"). (
- Raw or cooked shrimp (no seasoning!) ๐ฆ
- Scallops / Mussels / Clams (raw)
- Fish (raw, unseasoned, like Salmon)
- Mealworms (dried): (A 10/10 favorite. Buy in the "bird" aisle). (
- Crickets (dried): (Also a 10/10. Buy in the "reptile" aisle). (
- Egg (boiled or scrambled, no salt!) ๐ณ
- Chicken (uncooked, unseasoned)
2. Fruits (The "Sweet" - 20% of diet)
This is their "energy" food. They love sweet fruits.
- Mango (a huge favorite)
- Coconut (shredded): (A 10/10 favorite. MUST be 100% unsweetened!). ( ๐ฅฅ
- Banana / Banana Chip (unsweetened) ๐
- Strawberry / Blueberry / Raspberry ๐
- Apple (no seeds!) ๐
- Grapes
- Pineapple
3. Vegetables (The "Vitamins" - 20% of diet)
They love colorful veggies.
- Carrot (shredded) ๐ฅ
- Corn: (A 10/10 favorite. Cornmeal, popcorn, or fresh). ( ๐ฝ
- Sweet Potato (raw or cooked)
- Broccoli / Cauliflower
- Spinach / Kale (in moderation, they have oxalates)
- Bell Peppers (Red, Yellow)
- Seaweed / Nori: (MUST be 100% unsalted. Buy in the "sushi" aisle). (
4. Nuts, Grains & "Other" (The "Fats/Carbs" - 10%)
This is "fatty" fuel and "foraging."
- Walnuts (crushed)
- Almonds (crushed)
- Pecans (crushed)
- Chia seeds / Flax seeds (a "superfood")
- Peanut Butter (100% natural, no sugar/salt!)
- Oats (uncooked, rolled)
- Rice (cooked, plain)
- Popcorn (100% plain, air-popped. No salt or butter!). ๐ฟ
5. The "Foraging" Foods (The "Fun" Stuff) ๐ณ
These are "bonus" foods. They are essential for a happy habitat.
- Worm Castings: (This is "clean earthworm poop"). (It is their #1 favorite food. I am not joking. They go crazy for it. It is full of microbes. Buy it in the "garden" aisle. (Organic!). (
- Cork Bark / Cholla Wood: (They eat this. It is "cellulose." It is essential). (
- Leaf Litter: (Oak, Maple, Sea Grape). ((Boil or bake them first to kill bugs/mold). (
- Greensand: (A "mineral" supplement from the garden aisle). (
The CALCIUM Rule (The "Shell" Food) ๐
This is NOT optional. It is critical. A crab has an exoskeleton. This is its "outer shell" (under the "shell"). ( To "grow," it must shed this exoskeleton. (This is "molting"). ( This is the most dangerous time of its life. To "grow" a new, hard exoskeleton... ...it needs a massive amount of CALCIUM. You must provide this 24/7. It must be in a separate, dry bowl. Good Calcium Sources:
- Cuttlebone: (This is the #1 choice. Buy it in the "bird" aisle. It is 100% pure calcium). (
- Crushed Oyster Shell: (Also in the "bird" aisle). (
- Crushed Eggshells: (Rinse them. Bake them (10 min). Crush them into a powder). (
- Crab/Lobster Shell: (This is a 10/10 treat! Bake it, crush it). (
The WATER Rule (The Other #1 Killer) ๐ง
This is the other "pet store" trap. They sold you a tiny, shallow water dish. And they sold you "de-chlorinator" drops. Trap 1: The "Sponge." Do not use a sponge. They are a bacteria factory. They are gross. And they are a 10/10 myth. Throw it away. Trap 2: The "De-Chlorinator" (The "Poison"). "Tap water" is poison. It has Chlorine. Chlorine will kill a crab. (It burns their "gills"). ( You must use a "de-chlorinator" (a water conditioner). But which one? A "cheap" (Reptile) conditioner... ...only removes Chlorine. It does not remove Heavy Metals. Or Chloramine (a "new" chemical). You must use a "pro-level" conditioner. The #1 choice is "Seachem Prime." (From the "fish" aisle). (It is the 100% safe, "pro" choice. The "REAL" Trap (The 2-Water Rule): Hermit crabs need TWO water bowls. Not one. This is 100% non-negotiable. 1. A FRESH Water Bowl: (De-chlorinated with "Prime"). ( 2. A SALT Water Bowl: (Yes. Salt. They must have this). ( Why? They are "land" crabs. But they must "balance" their "gill" salinity. They need the salt. Without it, they will slowly suffocate... ...and die. This is a 1-3 month death. It is NOT "aquarium salt." It is NOT "table salt." (Table salt has anti-caking agents. It is poison). ( You must buy "Marine Salt." (Like "Instant Ocean" or "API Marine"). (This is the "pro-level" salt. It is from the "saltwater fish" aisle. It recreates the ocean. The "Depth" Rule: The bowls must be deep enough... ...for the crab to submerge its shell. (To clean it). ( But not so deep it can drown. (Add small rocks, so it can climb out). (
The "NO" List (The "Poison") ๐ซ
This is the "danger" list. Never feed these.
- "Pellet" Food: (The #1 killer. Throw it away). (
- Table Salt / Spices: (This will burn their gills. It is poison). (
- Tap Water (Chlorinated): (This is also poison). (
- Citrus: (Oranges, Lemons, Limes). (It is too "acidic" for them. (
- Dairy / Processed Meat: ("Processed" meat (like ham) is too salty. Dairy is not good for them). (
- Onion / Garlic: (These are often listed as "toxic"). (
- Pesticides: (This is why "organic" is so important. A pesticide will kill your "bug-like" crab). (
Conclusion: A "Gourmet" Scavenger
A hermit crab is not an "easy" pet. It is a "complex" exotic. The #1 rule of the hermit crab diet: THROW AWAY THE PELLETS. They are poison. They are full of chemicals. Your crab is a "gourmet scavenger." It needs VARIETY. The "Daily" Plate: Give them a tiny "buffet" every night. (They are nocturnal). (
- 1 Protein (shrimp, mealworm)
- 1 Fruit (mango, coconut)
- 1 Veggie (carrot, corn)
- 1 "Other" (worm castings, nuts)
