Hedgehog Diet ๐ฆ (The Guide!)
CRITICAL WARNING: "Pet" vs. "Wild" ๐จ
This is a critical warning. It is the most important part of this guide. Are you asking about a PET? ((A 'African Pygmy' hedgehog). ( Or a WILD hedgehog? ((A 'European' hedgehog in your garden). ( Their diets are 100% DIFFERENT. Feeding the wrong food... ...(like "milk and bread")... ...can be FATAL. This guide will cover BOTH. Please read the right section!
Part 1: The Pet Hedgehog Diet (African Pygmy)
This is for the "African Pygmy." (The "pet" in your home). ( What is their "job"? They are an INSECTIVORE. This means they eat bugs. ๐ This is the #1 key. They are not a "rodent." (Like a hamster). ( They are not "herbivores."
The "Staple" Food: Cat Kibble! ๐ฅ
This is the #1 "hack." It is the "base" of their diet. It is 80% of their food. What is the best "base" food? A high-quality, low-fat... ...dry CAT KIBBLE. (Or a "Hedgehog Kibble"). ( Why cat food? (Not dog food?). ( Hedgehogs (like cats)... ...need a high-protein diet. And a low-fat diet. Dog food is too "low" in protein. And too "high" in fat. (Usually). (
How to Choose the Kibble (The 4 Rules)
You must be a "label detective." ๐ต๏ธ This is a medical choice. It is 100% vital. A "bad" kibble will cause obesity. (This is the #1 pet hedgehog killer). ( Rule 1: Meat is #1. The first ingredient must be: "'Chicken,' 'Turkey,' or 'Meat Meal.'" โ It can NOT be: "'Corn,' 'Wheat,' or 'Fillers.'" ๐ซ Hedgehogs do not digest "fillers" well. Rule 2: The "Protein" %. The "Guaranteed Analysis" must be: "30% to 35% Protein." This is the "sweet spot." Rule 3: The "Fat" % (THE KEY!) This is the most important number. The "Fat" must be LOW. The "Fat" must be: "10% to 15% FAT." (Or less. "8%" is great!). ( If the fat is "20%"... ...it is a "no-go." Your hedgehog will get fatty liver disease. Your hedgehog will get obese. This is a fatal mistake. Rule 4: The "Peas" Trap. Avoid "grain-free" cat foods... ...that are full of peas, lentils, or legumes. (These are a new "filler." They are linked to heart problems... ...in cats (and possibly hedgehogs). Stick to a "rice" or "classic" blend.
The "Real" Food: Insects! ๐ (Essential)
This is the "pro-level" step. This is not optional. It is mandatory. Your pet is an insectivore. It must eat insects. This is for "chitin." (The "exoskeleton"). ( This is for "enrichment." (The "hunt"!). ( This is a "treat." (Not the "main" diet). ( Give 4-5 bugs, a few times a week. The "Good" Bug List:
- Dubia Roaches: (This is the #1 BEST bug. The "gold standard." It is high-protein. And low-fat. And 100% safe). (
- Crickets: (Also a 10/10 choice. Good protein. Low fat. Good "chase" enrichment). (
- Mealworms (Live or Dried): (This is the "classic" treat. They love them. TBut they are a "treat." They are the "Twinkie" of the bug world. They are very high in fat. (Like 40% fat!). (
- Waxworms: (This is CANDY. This is 100% "junk food." They are 60% fat. TThis is a "once-a-month" only treat. (Or for a "sick" hedgehog). (
- Wild Bugs: NEVER feed a "wild" bug... ...from your yard! It could have pesticides. (This will kill your hedgehog). (It could have parasites. (This will kill your hedgehog). (
The "Treats" (Protein / Fruit / Veg)
This is the "other" 5-10% of the diet. A small amount of "real food." 1. Other Proteins (Good):
- Cooked, unseasoned chicken (shredded) ๐
- Cooked, unseasoned ground turkey
- Cooked egg (hard-boiled or scrambled, no salt!) ๐ณ
- Apple (a tiny piece, no seeds!) ๐
- Banana (a tiny "coin") ๐
- Berries (a single blueberry or raspberry) ๐
- Melon (a tiny cube) ๐
- Leafy Greens (Spinach, Kale, Romaine)
- Cucumber (a small slice)
- Carrot (cooked and soft)
- Bell Pepper
The Pet "NO" List (POISON!) ๐ซ
This is the 100% "danger" list. These foods are TOXIC. They are FATAL. Do not ever feed these.
- Grapes & Raisins: (This is 100% FATAL. It causes instant kidney failure). ( ๐๐ซ
- Avocado: (This is 100% TOXIC to many animals). ( ๐ฅ๐ซ
- Nuts & Seeds: (This is a "choking" hazard. And they are way too high in fat). ( ๐ฅ๐ซ
- Chocolate: (100% fatal). ( ๐ซ๐ซ
- Onion & Garlic: (These are toxic to most pets). (
- DAIRY: (See the "Wild" section. Hedgehogs are LACTOSE INTOLERANT. No milk, no cheese, no yogurt). ( ๐ฅ๐ซ
- Human "Junk Food": (Chips, pretzels, bread, sugar). (
Part 2: The Wild Hedgehog Diet (European) ๐ฌ๐ง
This is for the "European" hedgehog. (The one in your UK/EU garden). ( This is not a pet. It is a wild animal. It is a "gardener's friend."
What They Really Eat (The "Garden Friend")
They are 100% INSECTIVORES. They are the "night-time" pest control. Their diet is:
- Slugs ๐
- Snails
- Beetles ๐
- Caterpillars ๐
- Earthworms
- Bird eggs (if they find them)
The "Milk & Bread" MYTH (The FATAL TRAP!) ๐ซ
This is the most important part of this guide. This is a FATAL myth. You see it in "children's books." (e.g., "Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle"). ( The "myth" is: "Leave a bowl of milk and bread... ...for the "poor, hungry" hedgehog." This is 100% a DEATH SENTENCE. Do not do this. Ever.
The "Why" (The 2 Poisons):
1. Milk (The "Dairy" Poison): ๐ฅ๐ซ Hedgehogs (all of them)... ...are LACTOSE INTOLERANT. (Just like a "stray cat"). ( They cannot digest "lactose" (milk sugar). It gives them severe, explosive diarrhea. The "squirts." This "diarrhea"... ...causes fatal dehydration. They will die. 2. Bread (The "Malnutrition" Poison): ๐๐ซ Bread is "junk food." It is "empty carbs." It has no protein. It has no nutrients. The hedgehog will "fill up" on the junk food. (It is "easy" to eat). ( But it is getting no nutrition. It is "full" but "starving." This leads to Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD). Their bones will "break." They will die. You are "killing them with kindness." Do not do it.
How to Help a Wild Hedgehog (The Safe Way) โ
So, what can you do? If you see a wild hedgehog... ...and it is "struggling" (in daytime, in winter)... ...how can you safely help? 1. Fresh WATER: This is the #1 lifesaver. A shallow bowl of fresh water. (Especially in a hot summer). ( 2. The "Safe" Food: If you must feed it... ...(to help it "bulk up" for winter)... ...do NOT give it "slug pellets." (This is 100% poison!). ( You give it the same food... ...as a "stray cat." This is the 10/10, vet-approved hack. Give them a bowl of:
- Wet Cat Food (Pรขtรฉ-style) ๐
- Wet Dog Food (Meat-based, not grain-based)
- Kitten Kibble (High-protein, small bites)
Conclusion: An "Insectivore" (Not a "Rodent")
The hedgehog diet is simple. They are Insectivores (bug-eaters). Not "rodents." Not "herbivores." For a PET Hedgehog (African Pygmy): Base: High-protein, low-fat (10-15%) Cat Kibble. Treats: Live/dried insects (Dubia roaches, crickets). And small bits of fruit/veg. For a WILD Hedgehog (European): Base: Slugs, Snails, Beetles. (They are the "gardener's friend"). (
To Help: Put out wet cat food. And water. The GOLDEN RULE: NEVER give a hedgehog MILK or BREAD. It is POISON. It will kill them. Stick to "cat food" and "bugs." ๐
