Bearded Dragon Diet π¦ (The Guide!)
What is a Bearded Dragon?
A "Bearded Dragon" (or "Beardie") is a popular pet. It is a reptile. It is a lizard from Australia. They are famous for being "calm." And "docile." And "easy to handle." But their "care" is not easy. It is complex. It is "exotic" pet care. You need the right lights. (UVB and Heat). (And you must get the diet right. This is the #1 "beginner" mistake. A "bad" diet is a fatal mistake. It will kill your dragon. (Slowly, and painfully). ( This guide is your survival map. πΊοΈ We will explain the real diet. We will explain the dangers. And we will explain the magic rules. (Like "calcium dusting"). (
The "Why": The Omnivore Rule
What is their "job"? They are OMNIVORES. Omnivore = "eats everything." They eat Meat (Insects). π They eat Plants (Vegetables/Greens). π₯¬ This is the "simple" answer. But this is where the TRAP is. The ratio (Bugs vs. Plants)... ...100% FLIPS as the dragon ages. A baby's diet is the OPPOSITE... ...of an adult's diet. This is the #1 most important rule of this guide.
The #1 Rule: Age Changes EVERYTHING π
This is the "core" concept. You must know this.
1. Baby / Juvenile (0-12 months): The "Protein" Phase
A "baby" (hatchling) or "juvenile"... ...is growing. Very, very fast. (From 4 inches to 18 inches!). ( What do you need for "growth"? PROTEIN. And FAT. Therefore, a baby's diet is: ~80% BUGS (Insects). π And ~20% PLANTS (Greens). π₯¬ They are "carnivores" (insectivores) first. They are "protein-monsters." They need this fuel to grow.
2. Adult (12+ months): The "Veggie" Phase
An "adult" (1 year or older)... ...is NOT growing. It is "maintaining." If you keep feeding it 80% bugs... ...(high protein, high fat)... ...it will get OBESE. This is the #1 "killer" of adult beardies. Fatty Liver Disease. It is 100% fatal. And 100% caused by a "bad" (baby) diet. An adult's diet FLIPS. An adult's diet is: ~80% PLANTS (Greens/Veggies). π₯¬ And ~20% BUGS (Insects). π They are "herbivores" first. The "bugs" are just a "treat." (A "salad topping"). ( This is the #1 trap. Your adult dragon must eat its "salad."
The "Bugs" (Protein Menu) π
This is the "meat" menu. It is 80% of a baby's diet. It is 20% of an adult's diet. But not all bugs are "equal." Some are "staples." Some are "junk food."
The "Staple" Bugs (Feed Daily) β
This is the "healthy" list. They are high-protein. And low-fat. 1. Dubia Roaches: π₯ (This is the #1 BEST bug. The "gold standard." It is high-protein. Low-fat. Easy to "gut-load." And they cannot climb. And they do not smell. 2. Crickets: (A 10/10 choice. Good protein. Low fat. Good "chase" (enrichment). The "con": They chirp. They smell. And they die fast). ( 3. Silkworms: (A "superfood." Very soft. Very nutritious. Expensive). ( 4. BSFL (Black Soldier Fly Larvae): (Also called "NutriGrubs" or "Calci-Worms"). (These are a 10/10 staple. They are naturally high in CALCIUM. They are amazing). (
The "Treat" Bugs (Feed Rarely) π¬
This is the "junk food" list. This is CANDY. Why? They are very high in FAT. 1. Mealworms: (This is a trap. Pet stores sell these as a staple. They are NOT. They are 30% fat. And their "shell" is hard to digest. This is a "treat" only. 2. Superworms: (This is a 10/10 trap. They are worse than mealworms. They are 40%+ fat. This is a "bacon-bomb." It is very unhealthy. It will cause obesity. This is a "once-a-week" (max) treat. 3. Waxworms: (This is 100% CANDY. This is "cocaine" for dragons. TThey will get addicted. They will refuse to eat anything else. TWhy? It is 60% FAT. This is a "gummy bear." Do not feed these. (Unless your dragon is sick... ...and "on strike" from food. This is a "last resort" food). (
The "Hydration" Treat (A Good "Treat") π§
Hornworms (The big, green ones): These are a good treat! Why? They are 90% WATER. (And low-fat). ( This is a "hydration" treat. It is a "Gatorade" for your dragon. It is a 10/10 treat for a "dehydrated"... ...or "constipated" dragon. (
The "Greens" (Plant Menu) π₯¬
This is 80% of an adult's diet. This is the "salad." But not all "greens" are safe. Some are poison.
The "Staple" Greens (Feed Daily) β
This is the "healthy" list. These greens have a good calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. The "Gold Standard" List:
- Collard Greens: π₯ (The #1, 10/10, "gold standard" staple). (
- Mustard Greens: π₯ (The other #1, 10/10, "gold standard"). (
- Turnip Greens: (A 10/10 choice). (
- Dandelion Greens: (A 10/10 choice. But only "store-bought." Or "pesticide-free" from your yard). (
- Squash (All types): (Butternut, Acorn, Spaghetti, Zucchini). (A 10/10 staple. Shred it with a cheese grater). (
- Bell Peppers (Red, Green, Yellow): (A great "color" treat. Chop it small). (
- Carrots (Shredded): (Good, but high in Vitamin A. Use as a "treat" (1-2x a week). (
The "BAD" Greens (The "Oxalate" Trap!) π«
This is a CRITICAL trap. You must know this. These "healthy" human foods... ...are POISON to a bearded dragon. (A "slow" poison). ( Why? They are high in OXALATES. (Oxalic Acid). ( What do "Oxalates" do? They "bind" to calcium. In the gut. This means the Oxalate... ...stops your dragon... ...from absorbing the calcium. From all their food. This causes Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD). (We will cover this later). (It is a fatal disease. The "Oxalate" (BAD) List:
